Kids make money using Ebay

by nclemow on December 8, 2009

More and more everyday people are buying and selling online.  Unless you have lived in a cave the last few years everybody knows about Ebay.  Ebay is an online auction site but it can also be a place where kids make money.  However even though your child can use this site to make money they can also learn some wonderful subtle skills by using it as well.  The good part about the skills they will learn is they probably won’t even realize they are learning them.

Ebay is a good and safe place to begin a business, because you don’t need money to get started.  You can establish a free account and in that short amount of time you are in business.  Ebay will introduce your child into the world of online auctions.  This helps from both the buyer and sellers end.  As a seller one great thing you will learn is that people will buy almost anything.  That old expression one man’s junk is another man’s treasure is demonstrated everyday on ebay.  Why this is important to your child is because it can change the way they look at things.   For example old items that would normally be thrown away can now be sold.  By teaching your child to look for these things they are learning how to discover new opportunities and this is a key to being successful in life.  You are actually giving your child vision to not only see what is there but to also see the opportunity behind it.  This is exactly how entrepreneurs think and you can help your child think the same way.

Another great subtle benefit of ebay is learning communication skills.  In the world of texting and twitter where things like LOL and BFF are common language in the texting world, basic communication skills are sometimes lacking.  By the way LOL and BFF mean laughing out loud and best friends forever for those who didn’t know.  On ebay people may actually ask you questions about what you are selling.  You then need to understand what they are asking and respond in a way that answers their particular question.  This is communication.  What’s great about this skill is your child has to respond in a way the asker can understand.  It is possible you may be dealing with people all over the world so you have to learn to speak the language of your audience so they will understand your message.  Some may understand LOL and BFF and some may not and your child will have to adjust their message accordingly.  Parents, whether your kids make money or not just learning this skill will help them for many years down the road.

So parents when you look at ebay I hope you see more than just a place where kids make money but also I hope you see ebay as a great learning tool.  Whether it’s giving your child vision or forcing them to communicate effectively they are learning essential business and life skills that will be with them for the rest of their life.
